Intelligence Perceived as Unattractive, Study Finds.

Intelligence can be detected, but is not attractive for video or live interaction

Explanation

This study was investigating the relationship between opposite-sex preferences and intelligence. Self-reported spousal preferences are consistent with the idea that human intelligence evolved as a sexually selected trait. And it could also explain how intelligence is valued across cultures, but the validity of self-reporting has been questioned, and it is unclear whether objectively assessed intelligence is truly attractive.

In Study 1, 88 eligible men measured their intelligence and filmed short video clips, and 179 women rated the video clips for intelligence, fun, physical attractiveness, and spousal attractiveness.

In Study 2 (N = 763), participants participated in two to five speed-dating sessions, had their intelligence measured, and rated each other on intelligence, fun, and mate attractiveness.

The intelligence measured in these studies did not predict an increase in attractiveness, but perceived intelligence and interestingness did. This means that intelligent people are perceived as more intelligent, but interestingness is a different story. Therefore, the conclusion drawn from these results is that intelligence is not important for initial attractiveness, which raises questions about the sexual selection theory of intelligence.
