Adverse associations of sedentary behavior with cancer incidence and all-cause mortality: a prospective cohort study
Sedentary behavior was associated with an increased risk of cancer and mortality from all causes, especially among Chinese adults with sedentary time of 10 hours/day or more. To prevent cancer and premature death, we need to reduce our sedentary time in addition to increasing our MVPA levels.Yuan Lin BQiong Liu BFangchao Liu BKeyong Huang BJianxin Li BXueli Yang BXinyan Wang BJichun Chen BXiao Liu C Jie Cao Chong Shen D Lin Yu EFanghong Lu FXianping Wu G Liancheng Zhao B Ying Li B Dongsheng Hu H IXiangfeng Lu B...Dongfeng District b j
Explanation
This study was investigated regarding sedentary habits and cancer incidence. The study design was based on three large cohorts of 95,319 Chinese with no history of cancer.
Questionnaires assessed sitting time and physical activity, investigated cancer incidence and mortality, and reviewed hospital records and death certificates, which were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. The results showed that the incidence of cancer and mortality rates ranged from 1.04 to 1.28 for those who sat for more than 10 hours compared to those who sat for less than 6 hours. Furthermore, studies have shown that a threshold of 7 hours of sitting time is associated with a trend of decreasing physical activity, so we must recognize that the problem is not that sitting time is associated with the occurrence of cancer, but that people who are sedentary tend to be less physically active.
