injury

In this article, I'll talk about extensor hallucis longus tendinitis.

Extensor hallucis longus tendinitis is a condition that causes pain in the muscles that raise the thumb upward.

The following is an introduction to this condition, which can occur whether you play sports or not.

When does it happen?

There is no definite cause, and the pain is felt from the thumb to the ankle and around 1/3 of the ankle.

It has also been reported that tightening the laces of athletic shoes can cause inflammation.

Characteristics

The affected area is pain and tenderness around the dorsal navicular and metatarsal bones, so it is necessary to differentiate between fatigue fractures of the navicular and metatarsal bones.

If the symptoms are severe, the patient may be able to hear a gripping snow sound when flexing the fingers. In severe cases, restriction of extension of the big toe may also be observed. In severe cases, restriction of extension of the big toe may also be seen.

・If shoes are considered to be a factor, check whether the laces are hitting the foot.

Case

17-year-old female

She was playing in a marching band and started to have pain in the back of her foot one week ago.

The pain was located in the extensor hallucis longus tendon, and a grasping snow sound such as "guzu guzu" was observed due to automatic contraction.

Summary

When the pain is severe, local injection of steroids may be necessary along with rest.I have dealt with this symptom in several cases, and the pain itself could be reduced within a week or two.

However, since the frequency of sports practice is also a factor in whether or not the patient will recover completely, it became difficult when short-term treatment was required, and there were times when I had to instruct the patient to rest.

In most of the cases I saw, the shoelaces were tightened too tightly, so tying a knot that won't come undone does not mean tightening the shoelaces. This does not mean that you should tie your shoelaces tightly.

You should learn how to tie a knot that will not come undone at a shoe store.
