Coffee and tea consumption and the risk of developing stroke, dementia and post-stroke dementia: a cohort study at the UK Biobank

Explanation

Previous studies have implicated coffee and tea in the development of stroke and dementia, but the combination and the risk of post-stroke dementia are unknown.

This study looked at coffee and tea separately and in combination with the risk of developing stroke and dementia. The prospective cohort study included 365,682 participants (aged 50-74 years) from the UK Biobank.

During the four years of follow-up, 5,079 participants developed dementia, and the association between coffee and tea and stroke and dementia was non-linear. (P for non-linear <0.01)

Coffee intake of 2-3 cups/day, or tea intake of 3-5 cups/day, or their combined intake of 4-6 cups/day, was found to be associated with the lowest hazard ratio (HR) for incidents of.

This was 32% lower for those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea per day compared to those who did not drink tea and coffee. These results suggest that drinking coffee and tea separately or in combination may lower the risk of stroke and dementia.
