Commentary
We are experimenting with the use of a high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to deliver the SARS-CoV-2 spike subunit vaccine directly to the skin.
It is shown that the vaccine is heat stable on the patch and that patch delivery enhances both cellular and antibody immune responses. The elicited antibodies strongly neutralized clinically relevant isolates, including alpha and beta mutants, and a single dose of the spike provided by HD-MAP provided complete protection from lethal viral challenge in an ACE2 transgenic mouse model, according to the study.
The results are based on animal experiments, so we will be watching for further progress.
