The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether there were differences in subjective sleep quality measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and objective sleep architecture measured using polysomnography between adult patients, pediatric patients, and healthy controls.

Case-control studies that measured polysomnography and/or PSQI in migraine patients were found, and pregnant participants and participants with other headache disorders were excluded.

As a result, 32 studies were eligible, of which 21 measured the PSQI and/or MIDAS in adults, 6 measured the PSG in adults, and 5 measured it in children.

The overall mean study quality score was 5/9, which did not mitigate any of the results, and there was no risk of publication bias.

Overall, adults with migraine had higher PSQI scores than healthy controls. This effect was shown to be greater in patients with chronic conditions.

Polysomnography showed that adults and children with migraine had a lower percentage of REM sleep.

Pediatric patients showed shorter total sleep time and increased or decreased arousals.
