Commentary

Although women's breasts are considered attractive because of their reproductive value aspect, most research has focused on their selective display between the sexes.

In this study, we examined women's perceptions of their breasts when primed in an intrasexual competitive prime.

In two studies, women (N= 467) were randomly assigned to a partner threat condition and a control group.

They were then asked to rate the breasts of the manipulated women for size, ptosis (i.e., sagging), and interareolar distance (i.e., cleavage).

Results indicated that women with larger breasts were rated as more attractive, fertile, reproductively successful, friendly, more likely to be threatening, and less likely to be referred to a current partner.

In addition, these ratings were found to be affected by the interaction between breast size, inter-breast distance, and ptosis.

These findings are described as contributing to an examination of how women's breasts are perceived in terms of intrasexual competition.
