Explanation
This study shows that former President Donald Trump was popular as an unconventional candidate who was right for the presidency despite his disappointing results. This study investigates the underpinnings of this popularity by integrating a dual process motivational model of narcissism and ideology.
Another study suggests that individuals with high narcissism are more likely to adopt right-wing authoritarian and social dominance-oriented attitudes and are more likely to accept socially and economically conservative policy positions.
Therefore, this study analyzed N = 302 highly narcissistic individuals' acceptance of Trump's anti-immigrant stance, the centerpiece of his political message from the campaign trail to the White House.
Results showed that right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation mediated the association between narcissism and support for Trump, and social and economic conservatism and immigration attitudes.
