Eat Like an Athlete: Sports Nutrition Insights to Support Active Aging in Healthy Older Adults

Oikawa, SY, Brisbois, TD, Van Loon, LJC et al. Eating like an athlete: sports nutrition insights to support active aging in healthy older adults. GeroScience (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s11357-021-00419-w

Commentary

Age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass has been associated with adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of developing metabolic diseases and loss of independence.

In an effort to improve the quality, mass, and function of skeletal muscle, athletes are adopting a number of nutritional strategies to maximize the benefits of exercise training and enhance recovery.

Many of the principles applied to enhance skeletal muscle health in athletes support active aging and have the potential to prevent sarcopenia in healthy (non-clinical) aging populations.

This study will discuss the anabolic effects of protein supplementation on ingredients that may enhance protein anabolism in older adults (e.g., omega-3, creatine, and inorganic nitrates).

In conclusion, we conclude that athlete nutrition strategies are applicable to improve skeletal muscle in healthy older adults, when implemented as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
