Stop it! It's not Tourette's disorder, it's a new type of collective psychogenic disorder

Explanation

In contrast to episodes resulting from previously reported studies, this research study reports the first occurrence of a new type of mass psychogenic illness (MSI) that spreads, exclusively via social media. The researchers propose a more specific term, "mass social media-induced illness" (MSMI).

The outbreak of MSMI identified in Germany was found to have been initiated by a "virtual" initiator who is the second most successful YouTube creator in Germany and is immensely popular among young people. Teenagers affected by this exhibit similar or identical functional "Tourette Syndrome" like behavior.

It is also clearly distinguishable from MSMI and Tourette syndrome tics.

This functional "Tourette's-like" symptom is to be regarded as a "modern" form of the motor variant well known in MSI. It is also a century-old expression of the stress response tied to the culture of postmodern society, emphasizing the uniqueness of the individual, valuing their claimed exceptions, and thus promoting attention-seeking behavior, exacerbating the enduring identity crisis of the modern person.

Researchers want to raise awareness of the current global "Tourette's-like" outbreak of MSMI, and since its spread via social media is no longer restricted to specific locations such as the community or school environment, young people in different countries are affected, with significant implications for health care systems and society at large.
