Did you know that millions of U.S. households are at risk of eviction due to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic?
Evictions can lead to social distancing, which can reduce individual capacity and accelerate COVID-19 transmission.
Using the variation in the expiration of smallholder eviction moratoriums in US states, we tested the association between smallholder standing and COVID-19 incidence and mortality.
The study modeled the associations using a difference-in-differences approach using the event study specification: 44 US states enacted eviction moratoriums from March 13, RD, 2020, to September 3, included.
Negative binomial regression models of cases and deaths included state and week fixed effects and controlled for time-varying indicators of testing, curfews, school closures, and masking requirements.
Results show that COVID-19 incidence and mortality increased steadily in states after the expiration of the excretion moratorium, with a doubling of COVID-19 incidence and a fivefold increase in COVID-19 mortality. -.
These results appear to mean an estimated 433,700 excess cases (CI 365200, 5022200) and 10,700 excess deaths (CI 8900, 12500) nationally by September 3, 2020.
