Commentary

A previously published study, "Experimental Evaluation of Carbon Dioxide Content in Inhaled Air or Without a Face Mask in Healthy Children: A Randomized Clinical Trial," was published in JAMA Pediatrics June 30, 2021, and it was announced that this would be retracted.

It was announced on June 30, 2021, by JAMA Pediatrics, that it was being withdrawn because a number of scientific questions were raised about the methodology of the study, including the applicability of the equipment used to assess carbon dioxide levels in this research setting and whether the measurements obtained accurately represent the carbon dioxide content of inhaled air.

Because of issues related to the validity of the study's conclusions, in the invited responses to these and other concerns, the authors did not provide sufficiently convincing evidence to resolve these issues, as determined by editorial assessment and additional scientific review.

It was announced that the editors had withdrawn the research letter due to fundamental concerns about the methodology, uncertainty about the validity of the findings and conclusions, and potential public health implications.
