Relationships between personality traits and sexting behaviors of the Dark Triad among adolescents and young adults in 11 countries.

Background: Sexting seems to be a common phenomenon among adolescents and young adults. Sexting behavior is described as the sending and receiving of sexual or other messages. Several studies have examined the role of personality traits in sexting behavior using mainstream personality taxonomies such as the Big Five and HEXACO. This study was investigating the relationship between Dark Triad personality traits and experimental, risky, and aggravated sexting.

The online survey included 6093 participants from 11 countries who completed a sexting behavior questionnaire and a 12-item Dark Triad Dirty Dozen Scale. Results showed that sharing one's sexting was positively predicted by Machiavellianism and narcissism. Both risky sexting and worse sexting were actively predicted by Machiavellianism and psychopathology.

From this study, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy were described as predictors of personality traits that predict sexting behavior.

In Japan, there is a problem of revenge pornography, and one of the ways to prevent it may be to predict these factors and not get involved.
