Growing evidence that fruit may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.

According to a new study from Edith Cowan University (ECU) published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, eating two servings of fruit each day reduces the chance of developing type 2 diabetes by 36%.

The study found an association between fruit intake and markers of insulin sensitivity, which suggests that people who eat more fruit may need to produce less insulin to lower their blood sugar levels.

The study looked at data from 7,675 Australians participating in the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute's AusDiab study and assessed fruit and fruit juice intake and diabetes prevalence after five years.

However, Dr. Bondono, who was also a researcher on the study, explained that no beneficial relationship was observed with fruit juices in the study, noting that insulin sensitivity was only affected in those who ate the whole fruit.

The difference between the two fruits is that juice contains more party bn and fruit contains more fiber, which could be the cause of the difference, but the relationship between this and insulin sensitivity is still unclear, he said.
