A story of reduced mortality depending on the number of steps you walk per day

A new study suggested that the more steps you take in a day, the lower your risk of death from all causes.

The research team, which included researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), both part of the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also said that the number of steps taken each day has a strong association with mortality.

In the study.

involved tracking a representative sample of U.S. adults over the age of 40.

About 4,800 participants wore accelerometers for up to seven days between 2003 and 2006.The participants were then tracked for mortality through 2015 via the National Mortality Index.

The researchers calculated the association between mortality and the number and intensity of steps after adjusting for demographic and behavioral risk factors, body mass index, and health status at the start of the study.

The results.

They found a 51% lower risk of death from all causes for those who took 8,000 steps compared to those who took 4,000 steps per day.

They also found that those who took 12,000 steps per day were associated with a 65% lower risk of death compared to those who took 4,000 steps per day.

In contrast, after accounting for total steps per day, no association was found between step intensity and risk of death.

The findings were published in the Journal of the American MedicalAssociation on March 24, 2020.

Conclusion

According to the results of this study, a daily step count of 12,000 steps significantly reduces the risk of death.

Even if you don't take 12,000 steps, the risk of death tends to decrease even if you take 8,000 steps, so this number may be a guide for those who want to live longer.

If you take only 4,000 steps, it will be difficult to reproduce the results of this study, so why don't you try 8,000 steps?
